my social media cleanse

s o c i a l  m e d i a …

What do you think of when you hear those words?

When I think about social media, all of the good things always come to mind first. I love being able to meet other bloggers through Instagram and I have always enjoyed seeing what other people are doing through their stories and posts. Since I love photography, I love editing my photos in VSCO & being able to post them on Facebook, Instagram, or any other apps that are popular at the time.

Plus, being a communications major, social media is kinda my thing. (lol) As strange as it may sound I feel a slight pressure from my major alone to be up to date with the latest features of these apps, and know everything from when it’s the best time to post or how to upload stories to Instagram.

But social media is so complex. Sometimes I think about the bad / negative aspects of social media: comparing my life, looks, clothing, material possessions, or what I am spending my time doing with what other people are doing. Like, for instance, you are scrolling through snapchat and see that someone is working out. IDK if I am the only one, but for a split second don’t you think, “hm, maybe I should work out?” Of course, the immediate answer is always, “nahhh”

Comparison sucks, but for some of us it is so hard to help but compare what we have or where we are in life when we are constantly taking in what other people are doing through social media.

Sometimes it is hard to remember that no one wants to share a low point in their life via Snapchat or Instagram.

Sometimes it is hard to remember that no one wants to share a low point in their life via Snapchat or Instagram. We aren’t gonna post about the bad grade or the things we are self-conscious about. We always want to post positive content, good vibes only – the posts that show us at our best. I am guilty of it, and I think that this realization is the first step in conquering social media, because it is something that I believe we all do.

Recently I read an article on Facebook. I guess it was fate that I even found this article in the first place. Also it’s super ironic that I found an article on social media that led me to enter a social media cleanse. It just shows how complex social media truly is.

Basically, this article made me think about how much time I was spending on social media. I will admit, I enjoy some platforms more than others. While I love Instagram, I was beginning to hate Snapchat, but I always felt obliged to check through every story and maintain each streak with my friends. When I was going places or hanging out with friends, I would actually begin to experience a feeling of obligation to Snapchat my location and show everyone where I was. (And let’s not forget about that one person you have to check and see if they watched your story once it is uploaded.)

The whole thing was just getting out of hand, so about 4 weeks ago I decided to enter a social media cleanse. When I say “social media cleanse,” I stopped checking a select group of apps, one of them being Snapchat. I chose the ones that were causing me to feel anxiety, stress, unhappiness, or compare my life to others.

An added plus, I feel even more in the moment when I go places, since I no longer feel like I have to snapchat everywhere I go.

Instead of deleting these apps, I decided to place them in a folder called “cleanse.” I guess I have a decent amount of self-control because I haven’t checked them since I put them in my folder. Surprisingly, Snapchat has been the easiest to completely cut ties with. I haven’t felt the least amount of curiosity about what other people have been doing this summer. An added plus, I feel even more in the moment when I go places, since I no longer feel like I have to snapchat everywhere I go.

very happy girl

I don’t want anyone to think that I am against social media as a whole, because I am not. I still use Instagram and probably check it way too much, but I am just trying to declutter my life and eliminate some of the sources that weren’t bringing me happiness anymore. I can truly say that I love Instagram because it not only connects me with my family and friends, but allows me to talk with other bloggers and form my own lifestyle blogging community.

Who knows, I will probably end up opening the apps in my cleanse folder again, but for now I am feeling content with my decision to leave them unopened.

If you related to anything I said in this article, or feel called to declutter your notifications inbox a bit, I challenge you to enter a social media cleanse. I think you will be amazed at how much more time you will have to focus on the more important things in life. Even if you cleanse yourself of only a couple of apps like I did, I believe you will notice a difference.

I kept a mental note of the things that I was able to accomplish with this time. These are just some of the things that I had more time to do…(note: I was able to do these things without checking and refreshing the apps in my folder ~ Snapchat, Facebook, VSCO, etc.)

  • watch my favorite movie EVER (Devil Wears Prada) ~ this may sound dumb, but haven’t you ever sat down to watch a movie & realized halfway through that you were refreshing instagram or snapchat for a majority of the movie???
  • more time in meaningful conversation with friends / family
  • saved on DATA!! (say whaaatt? – we run out of data just about every month, so my mom was super happy about this)
  • reading other blogs / organizing my own blog
  • making bracelets & starting madauer beads
  • hosting a bracelet giveaway
  • relaxing on the beach
  • eating healthy / successfully making a smoothie every morning for breakfast
  • exercising more
  • taking a bike ride with my dad every morning at the beach

One of my favorite vloggers / bloggers, Indy Blue, also wrote an awesome blog on the subject of social media / vulnerability – you can read it here. It’s amazing to read about vulnerability from the perspective of an extremely talented social media influencer like her.

If you decide to enter a social media cleanse / already have, let me know! I would love to hear about your experience or what you found most challenging about your cleanse.

thnx for reading ♡

a night at indigo octopus

This past Friday, one of my favorite stores, Indigo Octopus, hosted their first #indigodays event. The night was filled with plenty of denim, delicious food, and beautiful flowers.

I was super excited to shop the store’s newest denim / fall collection and meet up with the awesome people who work behind the scenes at Indigo. Michelle & Skip have always been some of my biggest supporters, encouraging me with my bracelets and boosting my confidence. I loved getting to see them, as well as see my bracelets on display in the store!

Michelle’s eye for picking clothing and décor for the store is spot on. Everything is so aesthetically pleasing and appealing to the eye. I loved her new product, especially for its soft blue and indigo hues.

& can we just talk about these flower arrangements for a sec? My mom and I could not stop looking at these creations from thurmanandfigfloral. Go check out their website for more flower inspo. Carly, the owner of Thurman & Fig, also created beautiful plant hangings behind the counter / cash register of the store. Her flower arrangements could be found throughout Indigo, perfectly matching the indigo / grey aesthetic.

A fun addition to the night was the free bandana / monogramming station. I picked out a navy denim bandana from Donni Charm that was then monogrammed with my insta name, @madauer. I absolutely love it and I can’t wait to display it in my apartment this year.

The food of the night was from One Coastal, a farm to table restaurant steps away from Indigo – literally it is next door! Everything was so fresh and delicious. From a cheese and cracker / fruit table to a flatbread pizza table, everything was amazing. My mouth is watering just thinking about the food from that night. My mom and I both tried one slice from each flatbread pizza. The first was a goat cheese, peach, and olive oil pizza – it was unlike anything I have ever had – SO good. The second was a prosciutto, arugula, and mozzarella pizza. Both = YUM

Once my mom and I finished our shopping and photo extravaganza, we headed outside to the storefront. Michelle decorated the whole outside of the store with lights, lanterns, and potted flowers. So cute! I couldn’t help but take a couple photos with our new thurmanandfig floral!

I loved everything about this night and I am so thankful that we were able to attend the event. It was also super cool to see my bracelets on display in the store. Huge thanks to Michelle and her team at Indigo for being so welcoming and encouraging.

If you haven’t already, definitely check out Indigo Octopus. Also, head over to Thurman & Fig and One Coastal. Next time you’re in Fenwick, these are all places you will want to check out.

how to spend your snow day

Hello from four floors up & HAPPY FRIDAY!

In spirit of yesterday’s snow day, I am dedicating this post to how I spent my first snow day in college. Since it’s winter and we will (hopefully) be receiving more snow days in the future, I am here to inspire you with some ways that you can spend your day while snowed in.

how to spend your snow day graphic

Movie Marathon

For all of my movie lovers, a snow day is the perfect time to watch all of your old time favs, or binge watch your favorite Netflix series. Get the popcorn and hot chocolate, and make the snow day your personal lazy day to relax.

Spa Day

Along with the movie marathon, creating a personal spa day for yourself is always a great option. If I were to create my own spa day in my dorm, I would be sure to use my Yes to Cucumbers Paper Mask and listen to some soft relaxing music. For some great spa tunes, check out my feel good playlist on Spotify.

Photo Shoot

This next one is what I spent my snow day doing – taking photos! My first snow day at college was one of the best I have ever had, mainly because I didn’t spend it inside doing homework, but rather spent it outside adventuring with friends.

Early in the morning I headed outside with my friends to take some photos around campus. Maggie, Kristen, and I adventured around the school and discovered some awesome spots on campus to shoot.  For some amazing photography, check out Kristen’s photography account on Instagram!

Later in the afternoon, I had the opportunity to shoot with a group of girls on campus to capture some shots of Greta’s handmade knit beanies! Greta is beyond talented and created all of the beanies featured in the photos. She recently started selling her hand-knit beanies as part of her fundraising for her Collegiate Challenge trip this summer. I love sporting my “Mad Grey” beanie around campus and I always receive compliments on it! Greta has an amazing vision and I cannot wait to see where life takes her in the future.

My second photo shoot for the day featured my friend, Bailey. We headed outside to take some photos for Love Your Melon, with the main emphasis of the photos focused on the LYM cap. If you have not heard of Love Your Melon, head over to their site and check out their inspiring mission and story. Not to mention they have awesome beanies, caps, and apparel.

Organizing

Personally, I love taking advantage of a day off from school and organizing my life. It is so easy for your dorm room to get a little messy, so spending a portion of the day cleaning and organizing your room is a great way to get your life back in order.

Crafting

Snow days are the perfect time to get your creative vibes flowing and get inspired! From knitting to making bracelets, there are endless ways to get crafty.

If you follow me on Instagram, you know that I have recently gotten back into creating my beaded bracelets. If you saw my latest post, you also know that I am interested in selling them! I am in the process of getting more beads and supplies very soon, so stay connected to my social media accounts for updates.

I hope you enjoyed this week’s post! As always, stay connected through my social media accounts featured in the side bar. I am so sorry for the delay in posting – I am in the process of creating a more concrete post schedule to stay on top of blogging.

I hope you have a fantastic weekend! Always remember to spread continuous positive + good vibes

If you decide to download “Over,” check out this awesome step-by-step “Over” walkthrough. I have had the app for a few years and still found myself amazed to learn more from this tutorial. “Over” also has several other tutorials on Vimeo, such as, “How to make a Transparent PNG in ‘Over.’”

Also, I wanted to make it clear that I do not have the PRO version of “Over.” I have not felt the need to purchase the PRO version ($7.99 per month), although I do buy new artwork and font packages within “Over’s” Store from time to time. You can find the Store by clicking the upper right icon on the home screen in “Over.”

Simple Design & Interface

Cute & One of a Kind Graphics

The graphics that “Over” offers are adorable and unique for any occasion. I know I mentioned this before, but always check into the “Over” store to see what graphic packages are available for free! I snagged this adorable free graphic for Father’s Day and created this collage for my dad.

The Gallery

Once you download “Over,” you will notice that the app saves all of your previous creations in your own personal gallery. So, if you ever want to go back and revisit one of your creations, feel free to do so!
